Functional Capacity Evaluation Instructions
This is a series of activities that test strength, flexibility, endurance, cardiovascular fitness, material handling, coordination, posture, repetitive movements, and other similar activities which will help determine your safe ability to work and perform daily tasks.

  • This is a two day test, please arrive on time both days.
  • The test takes three hours on day one and two hours on day two.
  • The evaluator must observe your body alignment and musculature at all times, therefore minimal, but modest, clothing is required. The area for testing is private and comfortable. Men will be shirtless or wear a close fitting tank top and close fitting shorts. Ladies may wear a sports bra, tight fitting tank top, or halter top and close fitting shorts. Wear comfortable shoes: tennis shoes or work boots are acceptable.
  • Please make childcare arrangements and do not bring children to the evaluation. Your full concentration and physical efforts are required throughout the entire test.
  • If someone accompanies you, they are free to wait in the waiting room in suite 200. Observers are not allowed in the testing area.
  • Take medications as you would on any other day.
  • If you are already a Blue Ridge Neuroscience Center (BRNC) patient, you do not need to bring your medications to this test. If you are not an established patient with BRNC, you will need to bring your medications in for us to record. We need the actual bottles, not a written list.
  • The evaluation is done by a Physical Therapist licensed in Tennessee and Virginia, who is an employee of BRNC.
  • Your safety is ensured throughout the entire test. Vital signs (blood pressure and heart rate) are taken before testing and several times throughout the evaluation.
  • Your full cooperation is needed to get the most accurate results for your referring doctor.
